Page 235: When The Oddessy was written over one thousand years ago, it was about a hero known as Odysseus, the King of Ithaca. During this novel, Odysseus and his crew encountered a cyclops known only as Polyphemus. In The Oddessy, Polyphemus was an extremely hostile character. Odysseus used the name Nobody to confuse the cyclops, which increased his chance of winning. That cyclops never killed "Nobody." In The Sea of Monsters, Polyphemus reappeared. He was still a very hostile character. "We broke the surface of the water and raced away from Polyphemus's island. Behind us, I could hear the Cyclops roaring in triumph, 'I did it! I finally sank Nobody! (Riordan 235)'" shows how easily this cyclops is tricked. He thought he sank Nobody after one thousand years, when Odysseus would have died long ago.
Page 35: Throughout this story, many mythological creatures are encountered. Some disguise themselves to appear completely human so the normal humans don't ever think anything of it. Chiron, for example, is a centaur, and to disguise himself to appear completely human, he uses a disguise that looks like a wheelchair to hide his horse body. Tyson enters the story in a similar way. "'Ach!' the old woman screeched. 'We don't take his kind!' She pointed a bony finger at Tyson. 'What was it? Pick on big-and-ugly-kids day?' (Riordan 35" explains that there is some "racism" between the different races of mythological creatures. Only the old ladies that were driving the taxi when this was said knew he was a cyclops, and Annabeth had to pay more just to get Tyson in the taxi.
Page 52: Camp Half Blood is one of many locations that is encountered in this story. This location is a safe haven for the half bloods, because evil monsters are always trying to kill them and they cannot get inside the magical barriers in this camp. Thalia's tree is a pine tree that is near the camp barriers that reinforces them to keep out monsters. While Percy and Annabeth are away from camp, this tree is poisoned. "A sliver of ice ran through my chest. Now I understood why the camp was in danger. The magical barriers were failing because Thalia's tree was dying. Someone had poisoned it. (Riordan 52)" is when Percy had discovered this, and he soon realized that this would be his main goal on a massive quest that spans for most of the story.
Page 79: After a few days of being back at Camp Half Blood, Percy has a dream where he is linked to his friend Grover. During this dream, he finds out that his friend has been captured by a cyclops. "'Yes!' Grover wailed. 'He thinks I'm a lady cyclops and he wants to marry me!' Under different circumstances, I might've busted out laughing, but Grover's voice was deadly serious. (Riordan 79)" is an explanation about the situation that Grover is in, and how bad it is. This causes Percy to have to add this to the list of things that must be done on his quest later in the story.
